Bravo, Mr. Frits Bolkestein

Soon to be former EU commissioner Mr. Frits Bolkestein, one of the most well-educated men in Dutch politics, compared the climate of fear to express oneself that is being created by silly moves such as banning a mural, with that under the Nazi occupation in World War II. He did so in Buitenhof, one of the best news shows on Dutch television. I am a big fan of Godwin's Law, but usually these kind of comparisons are made from a left-wing point of view, rather than a libertarian. (Mr. Bolkestein is a member of the Dutch Liberal Party, which is liberal in the literal, not leftist sense.) Rob Trip, one of the best interviewers Dutch PBS has (I'm wondering he still works there), immediately asked him if this was a proper comparison. To which Mr. Bolkestein rebutted: 'I was born in 1933, so I think I know a little bit about it.' Mr. Bolkestein caused great furor in the Netherlands in the early nineties when he warned about the problems integrating immigrants into the Dutch society. At that time, he was severely criticized for bringing the subject up, and comparisons between Mr. Bolkestein and Nazism were rife. I guess today was payback time.

To think my Grandfather and his brother's lives were put at risk liberating you people makes me sick. I'm grateful those two fine men never lived to see the results of their effort. Holland and Denmark... California without the morals! I'm sure you debauching, hedonist, sophisticated leftist are enjoying your child pornography, drug infested coffee shops, needle exchange programs and rich cultural mosaic. It would be better if you were crushed under the sandal of islam as a warning to other western countries that might think to emulate your diseased, degenerate "way of life". Any dutch thinking of emigrating out of their self-made hellhole should be beat with a wooden shoe. I beg you stay where you are, don't spread the netherland virus anywhere else.

We don't want you here. (ip:209.89.39.119) 7 November 2004 - 16:18 uur

Do you want some pot with that?

It's comforting to read that some leaders in the EU may at least be hinting of the dire fate which awaits the european continent if they do not temper the amoral cultural slide into relativism which holds that all cultures are equal and should be treated as such. We are currently witnessing a europe in thrall to immigration and cultural relativism, and demographics alone show a europe in decline and a culture in risk of being subsumed by those newcomers seeking to change it into a place more like the lands they fled. If you do not take steps now to assimilate those that have come to your countries and insist that they abide by (or at least cease calling for the destruction of) your cultures, we in the united states see little hope for your long term survival as a western liberal democratic state.

My apologies for the American poster above, it's just that many of us are frustrated when we see countries we supported in the past turn so blatantly anti-america and seem to stand against the ideals which once bound us together.

@Dan, thanks for your kind comments. I can understand why you're frustrated. It is a shame, Europe and the United States still have far more in common than any other two areas in the world. Then again, reading Of Paradise and Power didn't make me too optimistic the rift is going to be healed anytime soon. So if you're ever around, I'll buy you a Dutch beer, which is one of the things in which I think Europe still beats the USA ;-)

Congratulations on a no-nonsense response to the act of barbarity which has recently been perpetrated in your country.
My sympathies go out to all who are now being threatened with murder for not conforming to the wish-list of those who want to drag the world back into the theocratic nightmare of the middle ages.
I didn't realise the Dutch government despised it's own people quite so much however, will they be arresting Dutch citizens en masse should you dare to express any criticism of this act of butchery?
It seems there is really nothing very liberal at all about the governments we have elected in the EU, supposedly on that very premise.
The sting in the tail of cultural relativism is that it does not in fact hold all cultures to be equal, it regards it's own native culture, whether Dutch, English or whatever, as inferior to all and any others, and is hell bent on destroying the native cultures of our continent at any price.
Do not go under, good people of Holland, please do not bow down to this pressure, ignore the horrible comments by another poster above, you have many friends, we in Britain who can still be bothered to learn history know of your countrys suffering and it's courage under the nazi occupation.
In friendship and solidarity, as it should be.

What "no nonsense response to the act of barbarity" are you talking about saoirse? Painting over a mural saying "thou shalt not kill" because it offends muslims, then arresting sombody who had the balls to try and stop this act of craven subserviance. Maybe a PBS panel blaming dutch society for robbing muslim immigrants of their identity can be described as 'no nonsense'. Somebodies identity has been robbed, call the police. Even the obligatory candle light vigil and placing of flowers at the murder site was too harsh for the hapless dutch. Some muslim thugs had to come by during the vigil to remind them that some cultures find over-doing the grief thing to be offensive. What a sad-sack people the dutch are. The funny thing is they can't understand why more countries aren't like them. Hey! I've got an idea. Maybe a big parade with lots of nudity and child pornograpy on display will help smooth things over. All the dutch can fill up their crack pipes and take their kids to the parade. What a nice way to show these people how harmless you are. You can see I'm getting a kind of perverse pleasure out of watching you stew in the pot of raw sewage you've spent the last 50 years brewing up. Have a nice life.
