Although the bickering about the position of secretary Johan Remkes was ongoing, the Second Chamber and the Balkenende administration have actually done some work in the meantime as well. The list of proposed measures to combat terrorism is pretty long, so I put them on a separate page, which you can reach by clicking 'Lees verder'. Thanks to my colleagues at Elsevier News Weekly for providing the bulk of the information.
Some proposed measures by the Balkenende administration
Broadened powers for the Justice department, the police and the intelligence agency AIVD, for instance:
1) An increase in AIVD staff
2) The AIVD will increase their capabilities for 'digital' intelligence gathering. For instance, they will invest in data mining as well as get access to several existing databases, probably those of various Dutch government agencies
3) The Nationale Recherche, the Dutch 'FBI', gets an anti-terrorism unit
4) An increase in staff for protecting citizens who are at risk of a terrorist attack, as well as more staff to guard objects at risk
Mosques that are deemed a risk for Dutch society may be closed
A restriction of the possibilities for immigrants to retain their original nationality
Those Dutch who have a dual citizenship can lose their Dutch nationality if they harm 'vital interests' of the Dutch state
New radical Islamic immigrants will be sent back if they apply for legal status in the Netherlands, provided of course the authorities know of their affiliation
Radical and extremist websites will be outlawed
The foundation of a Dutch imam school (currently, we import bigots from other countries)
A broadening of legal possibilities to fire someone if they commit crimes which are intent on increasing hatred
Some proposed measures by the Second Chamber
No new residency permits for foreign imams after 2008
Inciting hatred through foreign radio and tv stations will also be outlawed.
