Immigration secretary to Dutch imams: Learn Dutch

Mrs. Rita Verdonk, the Dutch immigration secretary, had a meeting today with several imams. The encounter produced some intriguing moments. For instance, one of the imams didn't want to shake her hand, citing religious taboo as the reason. You can view a small picture here. But the most interesting part of the encounter was when Mrs. Verdonk told all imams she hoped next year she would be able to speak Dutch with them. Today, Mrs. Verdonk had to use a translator to converse with several of the imams. Commercial broadcaster RTL Nieuws just showed two imams fully agreeing with Mrs. Verdonk. Both of them of course spoke Dutch already.

Just a word to thank you for your weblog, which I somehow discovered while following up on the Van Gogh murder. As a first-generaion Dutch immigrant/US citizen, I'm fascinated by how the Dutch are coping with issues of Muslim intolerance (as well as other social issues in the Netherlands), and I find you comments right on the mark. I wonder whether you were aware of the photograph that appeared in the New York Times last week showing a couple of Dutch mourners with sign reading (as I recall), "het vrije woord is vermoord", which the caption lamely translated as "the free word is killed." They could use some help with their Dutch at the Times. Thanks for writing in such perfect English.

I applaud Mrs. Verdonk once more!

Of course the attitude of the left towards immigrants is condescending. That's why the world yawns at every new beheading -- ah, well, it's the Arabs, you know. We call it "the bigotry or low
expectations."

You Dutch are not superior but keep up the good work in recognizing and combating islamofascism and you soon will be.

Several years ago a Muslim public employee in Paris was fired because she refused to shake hands with a Western man. The French told her she had to treat all people the same, or shew could not work for the government.

Ms. Rita Verdonk was much too kind and classy. She should have made it clear that she, as a woman, was insulted, and maybe have suggested that the Imam should go back to his hole in an Islamic country, where women know their place. Doesn't the West have a 'taboo' about treating women as inferiors? Why is the Imam's taboo more important that the Western values taboo?

The Dutch and all of Europe had better develop a real intolerance for intolerance, not the PC version that excuses all non-Western cultures from criticism, and make it clear that free speech is for all people, all the time, in all circumstances. The fact is that Islam is basically contrary to the ideals of equality and human rights. Read the Quran - it is very clear that non-muslims and women, and other groups are to be second class citizens at best (or dead is alright too).

It is a fact that where Islam dominates, other religions, women, gays, jews, etc are oppressed and discriminated against. Muslims don't want to hear this, they prefer the PC version 'Islam means peace" that our leaders feed to the foolish public.

Holland and the rest of Europe had better deal with this now, because it will only get worse. I am very pessimistic about the ability of Muslims to accept Western ideals and still be honest Muslims. A look at Islamic sites, or many public forums, shows that there are mostly only two kinds of Muslims: those that will kill you themselves (the so-called fundamentalists) and the ones that will let other Muslims kill you and then make excuses (the so-called moderates). It is just like the James Lileks quote on this blog. What to do? I don't know, but the West had better do something - else the future will mean no freedoms, no rights, no pensions - only misery, pain and death.

Speak up. Be Free.

It is time for the West to demand that Muslims stop making excuses for
