Request to my (formerly) Muslim readers

The open letter below offers an interesting perspective on the current cultural debate, especially since we secular Dutch don't hear too much of what's going on inside Islam. In the same way, nobody ever heard what was going on in the orthodox corners of Dutch protestantism until people like Maarten 't Hart wrote it down. That alone makes this letter valuable, even if you don't agree with it.

Therefore, I'd like to invite other liberal Muslims and former Muslims to mail me their stories and experiences. If I feel they add to the current debate, I will be glad to put them up here or to link to them.

Since the author of the open letter explicitly referred to both female and male submission, this invite extends to both genders.

Why do you only invite LIBERAL Muslims to react?
Or do you mean LIBERATED?

Greetings

Cees

Hartelijk dank voor de special highlight Arjan, dat is zo aardig van je. (:

I meant to respond earlier, but I haven't been feeling good. I just can't seem to shake off this fever I'm having. Ayy it just hurts to think. ughh

There are so many more examples I could have listed about male submission within Islamic culture, but I'm hoping others will come forward and offer their stories. The one thing that's apparent is that we tend to keep our dirty laundry tightly locked behind closed doors. Not necessarily to keep it away from westerners, but more because of the fear of other people gossiping about us. Being gossiped about is one of the worst things that can happen to a Muslim, especially to women. Our worlds are ruled by emotion, we care too much about what others think about us, but all in the wrong context. I could have pressed charges against my bother when he tried to kill me, but I didn't. The #1 reason was that I didn't blame him, but the system that shaped him up to that point. To this day, the sisterly love I feel for him remains undiminished. A couple of years ago when I was in Amsterdam visiting with family, I was still afraid I would bump into him, but that fear went away when he sent his wife and kids to see me, giving me a special gift he had just brought from Morocco, a very delicate platter with a hand painted image of a Moroccan oasis that's been hanging on my wall since then.
The #2 reason why I didn't call the cops on him is because I pretty much knew every cop, being an ex-cop from Amsterdam myself, that would have been embarrassing for me. But most importantly the negative attention it would stir up within the Moroccan community, the possible embarrassment for my family seemed unbearable at that time.

@CC: No, I mean liberal. In Europe, liberal means believing in personal freedom. Funnily enough you tend to find liberal beliefs in right-wing voters such as myself. I know liberal means something else in Canada and the USA, but that's not where this blog is based. The word used to have the same meaning there too, if I remember correctly.

I`m not sure if the New York Times is one of your regular media sources. Perhaps you agree with the consersative regime in Washington that possesses too much of a liberal bias. In any event, you have a great story that is of interest to this particular subject.
