-20

That's the predicted temperature for the coming night in some areas of the Netherlands. (That's -4 degrees Fahrenheit for people who don't live in the civilized, metric world.)

Since my appartment doesn't have central heating, and there's only a very thin layer of glass between the chilly outside and my bedroom, I will have to sleep in my living room tonight. That's the only place in my (very old) house with a gas heater. I think it's kinda romantic though, a bit like the camping in your back yard you used to do as a kid.

I'll post a rant about the miserable excuse we've got for a national airport here in the Netherlands, but I decided it would be more fun if I gave them another night to fuck up as badly as they did last night. Numerous passengers then had to sleep on the floor because Schiphol Airport couldn't find them a place to crash (no aviation pun intended) when several flights had to be canceled. God knows you can't fly when it's below zero. That's why Anchorage has no airport.

Good night y'all.

Can't be worse than Heathrow. Written from my comfortable double-glazed dwelling on Maarssen. Foreigners have it easy.

Had the pleasure ;) of spending 17 hours in Schiphol Airport in December 2001. Was flying with Lufthansa from Chicago->Frankfurt->Vienna for a ski vacation, but due to a blizzard in Frankfurt the plane was diverted to Amsterdam.

What a nightmare. We sat on the plane for almost two hours before there was a gate free for us to deboard.

Since the flight crew exceed the hours they could legally fly we had to wait for another crew to fly in from Germany. The folks at the Lufthansa counter pretty much left us all stranded....they didn't know what to with us. They kept telling us "one more hour".

However, a few of us passengers did become fast friends over many, many pints. I forget the bar's name, but it is the one with the water/glass wall behind the bar. Geert-the-Bartender laughed because we sat there through his whole shift. He ended up buying us several rounds.

I finally made it to Vienna, but my luggage/skis took two days to catch up...essentially three days lost of my vacation.

But coming from Chicago, where the airport is shut down 1 or 2 times each month during the winter due to snow, I can't really complain too much.
