'The Republicans failed to plan for Iraq'

Is a lie. It's just that the Republican who does have some pretty sound ideas about how to go forward is not in charge of the Department of Defense. For that, we still have Donald 'I Don't Do Quagmires' Rumsfeld, supported by Dick 'Last Throes' Cheney.

Read this excellent article by John McCain. Then read this, and - on a lighter note - this.

McCain for 2008 doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

I note your scepticism & your sarcasm. I'm wondering - as a first class iconoclast, how does your anti-Rumsfeldian rhetoric go down at [http://www.osm.org/site/osmcontributors/ZachtEi] Open Sores Media?

Scuse me if that sounds a little snarky, but I have to admit I was taken aback when I saw that you had taken the King's Charles & Roger's Shilling. Wtf, Arjan?

Well, I've felt Rumsfeld had to go since May 7, 2004, shortly after Abu Ghraib broke. http://www.zachtei.nl/2004/05/07/000176.html Not because I held him responsible at the time, but because the buck has to stop somewhere, and he happened to be the secretary of Defense. So OSM might have known what they were getting into.

OSM did indeed put me up on their website. A bit prematurely, I might add, because I haven't signed their contract yet. I had hoped - and still do -more lefties would sign up lest OSM makes the same mistake the MSM have, by encouraging group think, albeit of a different political brand. Thusfar, I've only counted two lefties. That's not nearly enough people to pick a fight with.

For me the ideal organization to join would be one which encourages a lot of bickering. Nevertheless, I can see how 'BOSM' could create all sorts of mixups with those clubs Mr. Jack Ryan used to take his lovely former wife to.

I'll let you know when I've decided.

BTW, thanks for making me waste 30 minutes reading up on ancient British military recruiting tactics ;)

Late update:

OSM (Open Sores Media) have on their list of OSM Blogs www.zachtei.nl...which strangely enough, the owner of hasn't signed up to:

Arjan is a respectable, slightly righty blogger from the Netherlands who was incredibly informative during the events last year around the brutal slaying of Theo van Gogh. As such, he is a valuaable addition to the international side of the OSM push. I read him every day. Why, I wonder, do they claim him, when he hasn't signed up?

I should add that it's not entirely their fault, as I initially agreed tentatively and asked them to send me the contract so I could review it. It wouldn't be fair to blame OSM for my pensive moods.

Well, that's very kind of you. I would personally say that they've overstepped the mark - legalistically, which usually is a conservative trait - in saying you are one of theirs, when all they've done is invite you. Wouldn't you say they've gone too far - like what they did with their name?

Anyhow - aren't they at all newsworthy to you - they are supposed to be the talk of the blogosphere? (",)

PS: A shame the Ryan part was left out. The world needs more pictures of cat(suits).

I've put up an early attempt of a Christmas card here. No suits, just a cat. Great to practice your Dutch too.

Oh btw, I did blog about it, on my Dutch IT blog, http://www.pmmblognoot.nl More precisely, at http://pmm.typepad.com/planet_multimedia/2005/11/amerikaans_blog.html

The only right candidate for 2008 would be Condoleezza Rice, period.

Have a nice day

Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney etc. do have a clear for Iraq, but it's based on goals, not time lines. Iraq is not Vietnam, it's not a quagmire and yes, the insurgency is winding down. For Cheney to claim the "insurgency" was in its 'death throes' was perhaps overstating the case, but that's what you would expect a government at war to do, proclaim the other side is losing. And they are! Zarqawi is largely reduced to bombing weddings, funerals and mosques and the backlash has started. The only thing that keeps this "insurgency" going is the efforts of the US media and the Democrats to get the US to pull out. The left is actively working for American defeat, because if Bush reaches his goals they are toast.

"the insurgency is winding down"

Then why does Jalal Talabani suddenly want to negotiate with them?

Vaara, if you sail on the compass of the BBC you should not be surprised that you get lost.
He explicitly said that he wants to talk to leaders of the Baath party and NOT with the insurgents. Now what will be the political result of this is still a question for all of us and for himself.
