Wife of late Dutch 'Greenspan' mentioned in file of terrorist suspect

This is plain weird. According to local newspaper Het Parool Gretta Duisenberg, the widow of former Dutch National and European Central Bank chief Wim Duisenberg, is mentioned in the file of terrorist suspect Samir Azzouz. The file contains a Post-it note with Mrs Duisenberg's telephone number, as well as the words 'phone', 'cooperate', 'invite' and 'three o'clock' (in Dutch, of course). In the Parool article, Mrs. Duisenberg denies knowing Azzouz.

The newspaper goes on to describe accusations of Mrs. Duisenberg aimed at the Dutch intelligence service AIVD, for having placed a wiretap on her phone (George, sure you don't know anything about that?). She says she's certain of being eavesdropped upon because she hears a clicking sound every time she places a call. Right, intelligence agencies still work with technology from old Forsyth novels. Mrs. Duisenberg has courted controversy before: she is an activist for the foundation of a Palestinian state and, rather more controversialy, has compared the situation of the Palestinians with the Holocaust of the Jewish people.

Of course she denies know him....NOW! But when here husband was alive they were rabidly pro-Palestinian and made no secret of it. Their statements separately and as a couple were provocative and numerous in support of Arafat and the PLO and condescending and even downright hostile toward Israel. The political climate has change in the wake of the riots over the cartoons and the lovely and talented Gretta knows which side her bread is buttered on; besides, she doesn't have Wim to cover her now. So she's play it low key. Weasel woman!

Gretta Duisenberg, who is perhaps the archetypal Euro-socialist gorgon, might have made the most fatuous comment ever on the Arab-Israeli conflict. In a 2003 interview with Algemeen Dagblad, she said:

"The Holocaust excepted, the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is worse than the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands."

Er, aside from that, how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Considering the number of Jews that got killed here, some of my forbears may not have had as huge a dislike for the Nazi occupation as is commonly believed. (Then again, many Dutch still buy into the myth that it was our skills at record keeping that doomed so many of them, so common beliefs are not really anything to rely on here.) But I take it that's not what Mrs. Duisenberg was trying to say.
