I'm a Pandora addict

There, I've said it. No twelve step programs in my neighbourhood yet, and if there were, I doubt I'd be joining them If you love music and haven't checked out Pandora yet, please do so here. Pandora offers new musical recommendations based on your stated preferences.. It's sort of a Last FM like site with some small but important differences. First, Pandora is not Web 2.0: it doesn't have any social networking capabilities, unlike Last FM Second, Pandora is much more user friendly. I wouldn't send my dad to Last FM, but even he couldn't get into trouble with Pandora. (Now there's a challenge for the old man!) Third, and most importantly, the recommendations Pandora makes are a lot better than those at Last FM. I am downloading like hell buying like crazy to stock my music library with new artists that iTunes doesn't stock and even Shareaza is having a hard time to find. As Peter has said on his blog: I've discovered more new music in one week of using Pandora than in ten years of listening to the radio.

Too bad Pandora doesn't do classical music. Yet.

(BTW: My radio channel got its name because of its strange tendency to mix indie/normal/emo/punk rock, power/goth/nu/symphonic metal, middle of the road singer songwriters of the 'are you happy yet' kind, not so middle of the road singer songwriters of the 'we are all going to die and I'd rather it be sooner than later' kind, and electronic music. Yes, those are all genres I happen to like, so sue me. Except if Pandora plays Nathalie Imbruglia again, in which case I will sue them myself.)

Pandora is working on doing 'Classical' as well but they haven't gotten that far. I get updates every so often that they've added to my stations and advising me to check to hear the new tunes. And you always have the option of deleting them too. I may have, if I may be so bold, turned you onto Pandora. I was handing out the links at Christmas to my favorite bloggers and may have left you one but if it wasn't through me, I'm glad you found Pandora. I love it. Late in the middle of the night I have the TV on to the European news on Deutsch Welle or EuroNews or BBCWorld and Pandora running while I surf your blog and that of Erik at No Pasaran and lately Agora and Brussels Journal. You guys are in the eye of the storm and I want to see every night what your morning reactions are to what's going on, whether it's the second round of Paris 'youts' rioting or whatever. Pandora goes well with the news! :)

I should add that artists and their backers (producers and the moneymen) should look at operations like Pandora as we used to with radio. Radio stations that had great music could promote an artist or sell more records for the label than mtv ever thought of. By killing off radio with videos, people got into a bad habit of not just listening to music but having to sit and stare at the video as well. The result was that radio that played music died and then all these restrictions on 'sharing music' came in as if the artists and their labels were going to lose millions. The fact is that if they let people hear the songs for free...they'll be tempted to download it so they can play it whenever they want. Letting people hear the music free motivates them to buy but promoters and labels have gotten so money grasping. Thank goodness for places like Pandora.

Here's a link to every radio station in the world and the links within the links tell you what the station is and what their specialty in music is. For instance on a snowy cold Toronto night a 1 a.m. when the weather is howling outside, I can tune in to a midnight Russian live blues jazz show and boy! Was that music smoky and great! In Russia! So have fun and enjoy, Arjan. Smoochies to Ender! Mandy sends him her regards, >MeoW<
